Sports That Aren't Football Update

In the interest of making sure that all Arizona State teams get some coverage, Pitchfork Nation brings you the "Sports That Aren't Football" update.

Volleyball
After dropping three straight games to start the season last weekend in Las Vegas, the Sun Devils won three of four games this weekend at the Hilton Phoenix/East Mesa Challenge.

Friday saw the Devils get a weekend opening win in straight sets over Long Island, but followed it up with a close 3-2 loss to New Mexico. The Devils won games 1 and 3 of the match before losing 30-26 and 15-11 in games four and five.

The Devils bounced back over the weekend with a close victory over Iowa State on Saturday and a sweep of Northern Arizona on Sunday. A big time performance by Sarah Reaves did in the Lumberjacks, recording eight kills in game two. ASU now travels to Orem, Utah next weekend to participate in the Utah Valley State tournament against host UVSU, Weber State and San Jose State.

Soccer
The womens' soccer team now stands at 1-1 after two games this past weekend.

In their season opener on Friday night, the Sun Devils got a 50th minute goal from junior transfer Carla Scanniello to knock off Idaho State 1-0. The win was the first victory at ASU for new head coach Kevin Boyd, who was hired this past summer when Ray Leone left to take the vacant Harvard job.

On Sunday against UNLV, ASU fell behind 2-0 at the half and couldn't recover, dropping a 2-1 decision in Sin City. Freshman Karin Volpe scored the lone goal for the Devils in the 46th minute. Arizona State recorded their first loss of the season despite nearly recording double the number of shots as the Rebels, outshooting UNLV 23-12.

The ladies return to Tempe for their first home weekend of the season, hosting #9 Texas on Friday night at 7:00 PM at Sun Devil Soccer Stadium.
